What are the differences between Maniac and Mars Bar in the first half of the book.
In the first half of the book Maniac is not very confident and he takes things literally. People think that he is strange and don't take him seriously. He really doesn't care what people think about him and he is organized and caring for others. In the first half of the book Mars Bars is intimidating and everyone respects him. He thinks that he's really tough and judges other people. He has a lot of friends but he is also mean and a little bit of a bully.
"During the night March doubled back and grabbed April by the scruff of the neck and threw it another week or two down the road." This means that the month was April but the weather felt like March. So instead of the weather felling warm and sunny it felt cold and dull. When I read this quote it makes me think of a wrestling match between the two months, and whoever wins the weather feels like it would be in that month no matter what month it is.
Another way I think of it is you are watching the weather and the forecast for the nekt two weeks comes up. But all of a sudden April comes walking in and March jumps in and throws April down the days until he stops a few weeks away.
I really like how you said this and I never thought of it that way, I thought they meant wind speed and rainfall.
Question: How are the Beales and Mcnabs houses different?
There are many differences in the Beales house compare to the Mcnabs house. The one big difference is that the the cleanness of the houses. It doesn't have a hole and paint on the wall that come off like flakes when you touch them. On page 131 it said "The hole in the ceiling was so big they both could have jumped thought it at once. Also on page 131 it said " He ran a hand along one wall. The peeling paint came off like cornflakes."
In the Belaes house, everything is neat and the house isn't destroyed. Maniac also felt comfortable living there with them. Also the Mcnabs house was in the West end while the Beales house was in the East end. Another differences between the houses is the trash. In the Belales house, there is noting on the floor like cans. There might be a few crumbs on the floor but noting big. While in the Mcnabs house, cans, crusts, peelings, cores, scraps, and everything you would find in a garbage can was there on the floor. On page 131 it the author describes the thing on the floor like "Cans and bottles lay all over the floor, along with crusts, peelings, cores, scraps, rinds, wrappers, and everything you would normally find in a garbage can." Also there were raisins everyone and also there were crickets. Even though both of the houses were different, Maniac still felt like he had a home.
The question that I decide to pick is " how are the Beales mother and the McNabs father different. Let's just say... They are very different!😂
The Beales mother is a kind caring woman. She took maniac in and treated him fairly even though he was white and she was black. She let him lick the frosting of her thumb and spent time to take anything off that mean people wrote about him how because he was white. She treated him like a son and he treated her with lots of respect. Mrs.Beale trusted maniac enough to give him a room and let him stay in their house. She even let him bathe with her youngest children🛁! Overall she was kind.😊
Mr.McNab is a totally different story. He is gross!😁 He had cockroaches all over his house! He has holes in his ceiling too. He feeds his kids junk food. Only junk food. He also lets the kids drink beer! That's terrible. He is a bad influence on Maniac. Mr.McNab cares about nothing his kids do. He literally lets them do what ever they want. Like running away...🏃🏽🏃🏽 He is just a terrible father in general. He even lets his kids pretend to shoot black people from a pillbox. That he helped make! So after reading all that Mrs.Beale did and all the thing Mr.McNab didn't do I personally think Mrs.Beale is a better person and guardian.
I really like how you stated your opinion. Also how you said they are totally different because they are!
I agree. Mr.McNab is gross!Mrs.Beale was verry nice. I would pick Mrs.Beale over Mr.McNab any day!
This is just like my post. Mr.McNab is a slob and doesn't deserve to be a parent.
"The reunion had been ecstatic and tearful and nonstop happy, and inside he was pure July." I think this means that Maniac and the Beales were very happy. Also they are glad to be together again. I think this because ecstatic means to feel owerwhelmingly joyful or exited. Also when some people get really happy they cry. Finally, "Inside he was pure July." means that he was feeling exited. In July people are happy because they have two months of summer vacation untill school starts.
Allison I Liked how you explained what each part of the quotes meaning. I think you did a very good job wording your explanation. Great job Allison!!!
Mr. McNab is very different from Mrs. Beale.Mrs. Beale is very nice. On page 50 it says"He loved his new sneakers the ones Mrs. Beale bought him." So Mrs. Beale bought him things. Also she is accepting. On page 44 she says"You're staying here." Even though he is white and they are black.
Mr. McNab is a judge mental person. I know because when Mars bar walked in his house he said"Tell me when it leaves." So he is judging Mars before he meets him. He is also mean. On page 133 he says" Get the blocks!" And smashes the table so he is being mean to John. Overall Mrs.Beale is nicer than Mr. McNab.
I agree Mrs. Beale is nicer than Mr. McNab. Good job finding evidence from the book.
think that Maniac ran away from Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan because he thought they were going to split him in half. They Would not talk to each other and had two of everything Spinelli said“if they could they would of had two Jeffery's.” These things were driving Jeffrey crazy. He would eat with one Monday and one Tuesday. You would think they would just get in a divorce but they were strict catholic so they could not. This was really one of the reasons why he ran away. If they had got into a divorce he most likely would have stayed. They had two of everything so there was no lack of food or kitchenware or anything. This was not bad but confusing. You would not know which fridge to go into to get a drink.
The biggest reason was that they would not talk to each other. that would be a pain if you lived with two people who would not talk with each other. At the concert Jeffery started screaming "TALK TALK TALK WOULD YA TALK!" He was really mad that they would not talk to each other. That is the moment he ran away from them.
Contrast the Beale’s Mother to the McNab's father. The Beale's mother is very welcoming. She also is very nice and comforting. I think this because she let Maniac stay in her house. Also she fed him, cared for him, and loved him. Last she gave him a very nice place to sleep in her house.
The McNab's father was not welcoming and gross. He was also not very nice to him. I think this because he burped a lot and did not clean up his house. Also he did not really welcome Maniac into his house, and did not give him a great place to sleep for the time that he was staying with them.
I agree Mrs. Beale is very caring and she let Maniac stay at their house. I also agree that Mr. McNab is not very nice and messy. I think you did a great job on this post.
Analyze why Maniac ran away from Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan
In the beginning of the story Maniac ran away from Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan. One reason he did this was, they didn't like each other so they tried to split him up, in a way that was possible. I know this because, on page 6, Spinelli wrote, “If it were possible, they would have had two Jeffreys. As it was they split him up as best they could. For instance, he would eat dinner with Aunt Dot on Monday, with Uncle Dan on Tuesday, and so on. Eight years of that.” This means that instead of everyone eating together, or even being together, they would eat and do things in separate parts of the house. Never once going near each other. Jeffery/Maniac didn't like this because he kept having to move around, and having to go have lunch, dinner, or breakfast with different people. That must have been very excruciating.
My second reason is, Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan didn't talk to each other. Near the beginning of the story, the author says, “Jeffery Magee wasn't supposed to be up there on the risers, pointing to his aunt and uncle, bellowing out from the midst of the chorus: 'Talk! Talk, will ya! Talk! Talk! Talk!'” Maniac was yelling at his aunt and uncle to talk because they never ever talked to each other, and he was getting very annoyed with them not talking, so he ran away. They never talked so they almost acted like he was a toy. The way they split him up, and shared him, made it seem like it to him. He didn't like that, so he ran away. Maniac ran away from Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan in the beginning of the book.
The Beale’s and the McNab’s have different looking houses. The Beale’s house is neat and clean. The house is bug free and have clean walls even though Hester and Lester sometimes draw and write on them. The Beale’s home has no holes in the roof. Mrs. Beale cares that her house is clean. The McNab’s house is the opposite. Their house is messy and gross. The house is full of roaches and have walls that are written on. The roof has a hole in it that Piper and Rustle can jump through. All the rooms are very messy and don’t get cleaned. The McNabs do not care whether their house is cleaned or not.
I strongly agree with this. I wrote about the same topic. You are definitely right when you said that the houses are the opposite. And you are right, the Beale's DO care what their house looks like unlike the McNabs. This is a great post, but why is the Beale's house always so clean? Do you think it remained clean when Maniac left?
The Pickwells and the McNabs have many differences. The Pickwells are good, helpful people. On page "20-21" it says "(the Pickwells were always helping out somebody)"That means that the Pickwells are nice because they always help people. Also on page "159" Spinnelli wrote "And what black kid could hate whites after answering Mrs. Pickwell's dinner whistle?" That means eating dinner with the Pickwells would be nice so it is good to be with them.
The McNabs are bad, careless people. For example, on page "149" it says "Maniac! You're alive! We thought they got ya! We thought they slit yer throat!" That means they were judging and it is not nice to judge.
“During the night, March doubled back and grabbed April by the scruff of the neck and flung it another week or two down the road”. I think that this quote means that the same weather from March was continuing into April. I think this because it sounds like something from March is continuing into April. I think the most reasonable explanation would be the same weather continuing into April.
There are many differences between the Pickwells and the McNabs. The Pickwells are good, helpful people. On page "20-21" it says "(the Pickwells were always helping out somebody)" That means that the Pickwells are nice. Also, on page "159" Spinnelli wrote "And what black kid could hate whites after answering Mrs. Pickwell's dinner whistle?" That means that it is good to be with the Pickwells.
The McNabs are bad, careless people. For example, on page "149" it said "Maniac! You're alive! We thought they got ya! We thought they slit yer throat!" That means that they judge people and it's not nice to judge. Also, on page "131" the book states "Cans and bottles lay all over, along with crusts, peelings, cores, scraps, rinds, wrappers-everything you would normally find in a garbage can. And everywhere there were raisins." That proves that they leave things around and don't care about keeping the house clean. That's how the Pickwells and McNabs are different.
I like how you didn't just make a claim, you backed up your claim with a quote from the book.
Hester and Lester, and Russell and Piper are different from each other in a couple of ways. First off they are different from each other by their family. Russell and Piper's family are not fond of black family's and they are racist, while Hester and Lester's family don't judge people by their skin color. Next they are different by what they did ,to maniac for them to do something. Russell and Piper made Maniac go places such as to go on the East End so they would go to school. Hester and Lester made Maniac go in the bathtub with them so they would bathe. Lastly, Russell and Piper were hooligans because they stole and they weren't very nice to other black kids. Hester and Lester on the other hand were very nice and innocent.
I was thinking the same exact things! Piper and Russell were not excepting of others while Hester and Lester excepted everyone. I think more people should be like Hester and Lester.
I agree with what you wrote too. I love how you gave detailed differences and supported them with evidence. Your paragraph had lots of reasoning for the question you answered. Good job!!
Hector Street is like the Berlin Wall of Two Mills in some ways. It is a barrier that separates two parts of a town/city, even though the people on both sides aren't very different at all. Both barriers were there for no good reason. The Berlin wall was built to divide the communist and non-communist parts of Berlin, and Hector street is like a barrier because of segregation.
Hector street and the Berlin wall are also different in many ways. Most people didn't want the Berlin wall to exist, but the people of Two Mills decided that Hector street would be a barrier. Also, the Berlin wall was a REAL wall, but anyone could cross Hector Street, they just chose not to.
The Beales's house and the Mcnab's house are very different. The Beales's house was very clean and organized. They had different rooms for every thing like an average house today. All the bedrooms had a bed(even though Maniac did not sleep in his) and the bathroom had a tub and so on. Whenever there was a mess it would always be quickly cleaned up.
The Mcnab's house was not like that. The ceiling had a big hole in it that some one could jump through. Also there are roaches all over the house. There where beer cans scattered around the house too. The house was not clean. There is not much furniture in the house and the windows are boarded up with plywood. It had an odor too, plus the paint on the walls was peeling.
I think that is really creative! The Beale's house is definitely cleaner than the McNab's house. What made you choose this question? Why?
Compare cobbles knot to a hardship in your life.
I would compare cobbles knot to when I had to go to the dentist when I was 6 and get a shot in my mouth. I would compare these things because it was a hardship to untie the knot because no one could untie it so everyone was stressed out, and it was a hardship for me to go to the dentist because I thought the shot would really hurt so I didn't want to go and get the shot. Also I would compare these hardships because after all the pain and stress was gone I got over the shot just like how the kids in Maniac Megee got over the knot after it was untied.
During the book many of the characters changed, but some did not. When Grayson first picked up Maniac he judged the blacks and thought they were different from the whites. But Maniac helped him to believe that they were the same. Another character that changed throughout the book was Mars Bar. At first Mars Bar judged the whites and thought they were mean. Then Maniac showed Mars Bar to the Pickwells and how nice they were. Also Manic was very nice to Mars Bar and this helped Mars Bar to stop judging the whites.
Many characters throughout the book did not change, take an Amanda for example. At the beginning of the book she let Maniac borrow her book and let him into her house. Throughout the whole book she stayed in this loving and caring trait. Mcnab also did not change through the book. He started off as judging the blacks. Throughout the whole entire story he did not accept the blacks and even at the end he still did not like them.
That is very true McNab was always mean but Amanda was always nice.
There are a few differences between the Beale's and the McNab's houses. First, since Maniac was always cleaning in the Beale's house it was always clean. On page 46 the author wrote "He carried out the trash, mowed the grass, cleaned up his own spills, turned out lights, put the cap back on the toothpaste tube, flushed the toilet, and-Mrs. Beale called it "the miracle on Sycamore street"- he kept his room neat". But at the McNab's house it was always very dirty. On page 131 the author describes the house as follows: "Cans and bottles lay all over along with crusts, peelings, cores, scraps, rinds wrappers- everything you would normally find in a garbage can." The author describes the difference between an organized house and a disorganized house.
I agree with this, but what about the people living inside the houses?
I think the McNabs are different from the Pickwells in many ways. One way is that there is sixteen kids in the Pickwell family, and 3 in the McNab family. This makes me realize that the Pickwell parents must have to act stricter and not as lazy as Mr.McNab. Also, the Pickwells are more of a sophisticated family and have sit down dinners and talk. The McNabs just get Burger King and run off with their food. The final difference I have between the McNabs and the Pickwells is that the McNabs are mean and judging and even made a pillbox to Rebelle against blacks. However, the Pickwells are the opposite, they will let anyone go into their house for dinner and eat a meal. These are some differences between the two families. I think that the two families are polar opposites.
In Maniac's time with the Beales, he lives with a full family instead of just one person in the family like when Maniac was living with Grayson. Also, when he was living with the Beales, almost everybody in the East End was telling Maniac he didn't belong in the East End, but most of the people in the West End ( with Grayson) didn't seem to care.
When Maniac was with Grayson, Grayson was taken from Maniac when Grayson died, but when he was with the Beales, he decided to leave them because he thought he was causing them harm. Maniac's time with the Beales and Grayson were very different.
James that is a great comparison. Unlike the Berlin wall hector street was never crossed by blacks or whites besides Maniac. The Berlin wall was crossed by west and east people Berlin from berlin.
Hector street and the Berlin Wall are similar in many ways. One way is they are made to separate to places. In maniac Magee Hector street was made to separate the whites and blacks or the East and West end. The Berlin Wall was made to separate West and East Berlin. They are both similar because they were both made to separate people from other people.
Hector street and the Berlin Wall also have many differences. One is Hector street was made to divide the West and East end from interacting with each other. The Berlin Wall contained many guard towers and was called the "death strip". Also the Berlin Wall was to separate the Soviets. That is One way Hector street and the Berlin Wall are different.
Good difference and great similarity ilike how you encorparated facts into it.
I liked how you included facts about the Berlin wall like it was called the "death strip" and that there was guard towers.
Even though there are some similarities between the Beale family and the McNab family, one of the differences is their houses they live in. The McNab’s house is filled with clutter and everything is out of place. “Cans and bottles lay all over, along with crusts, peelings, cores, scraps, rinds, and wrappers-everything you would normally find in a garbage can. And everywhere there were raisins.” Spinelli wrote on page 131. Their ceiling has holes in it, big enough to fit both Russell and Piper through it. Even worse, the paint on the walls is peeling off so much, they came off like cornflakes. Also on page 131, the author quoted, “Nothing could be worse than the living and dining rooms, yet the kitchen was.” The kitchen had peanut butter on the floor, a large bird was on the table, and Maniac found out that what he thought were raisins were actually roaches. This house is clearly not fit for any proper family. The McNab’s are a messy, clumsy, unorganized family with a crazy house.
The Beale’s house is a lot more organized and assembled than the McNab’s house. The Beale’s house is neat, with the exception of the fact that Hester and Lester are always coloring or scribbling on the tables, television, and other furniture. Page 41 says, “When they walked in, Amanda’s mother was busy with her usual tools: a yellow plastic bucket and a sponge. She was scrubbing purple crayon off the TV screen.” The Beale’s mother is usually on her feet cleaning up a small mess, but they never leave trash all over the house. Their house is located on Sycamore Street with the address of 728. The Beale's live in the East End, while the McNab's live in the West End. It is clear to see that the author made these families have many differences, especially the way they live and how their houses are designed.
I agree when you said "The Beale’s house is a lot more organized and assembled than the McNab’s house." Also, I like how you said "It is clear to see that the author made these families have many differences, especially the way they live and how their houses are designed. "
If Maniac and Hollis started a blog what would it be named and what would it be about, why? Write the first blog comment.
If Maniac and Hollis started a blog together I think it would be called Standing United. I think they would call their blog this because both of them want equality and everyone is united and different in their own unique ways. Both of them want everyone to feel as part of a group and they feel no one should be left out and feel bad about themselves because they know how it feels to be different.
I think the blog would be about people across the country and how they overcame hardships and anyone is allowed to tell their story on the blog. I think this because both of them have been through several hardships like Hollis getting in the car crash and Maniac losing Grayson. Both of them think that everyone is important and should be able to tell people about what they've been through in life because a lot of people can connect with them.
Wow...you synthesized two complex themes into a new idea. IMPRESSIVE!
I think Mr Cobble put his shop on hector street the line between the east end and the west because he wanted both sides to be able to go to his shop. If it was in he west end only whites would go to the shop. If the shop was in the east end only blacks would got to the shop. So he put it in the middle so both races could go to his shop and he would get more business instead of only getting business from one side and not the other.
Jack I think you are right because if more people are coming in the more money Mr. Cobble makes and the happier his boss is for Mr. Cobble making so much money.😃
If Stanley and Maniac were friends in Two Mills I think that they would have bad luck at first but then they will eventually bring Two Mills together. I think so because in the beginning of Holes Stanley had bad luck but, later escaped camp and had good luck. I also think so because Maniac had bad luck in the beginning but, later had somewhat good luck.
I think that Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan hate each other because they remind each other of their brother or brother in law or sister or sister in law. They do not want to have to think about them because they are dead. Also they are probably too sad to talk to each other and it became the way of life for them. They were just depressed and stayed that way. Another thing is they probably blamed it on the other one and decided that they would not talk each other until one admitted it. I think that Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan probably started talking to each other after maniac ran away. But they also could have thought it was the others fault and got in a divorce even if they were strict catholic. These are all inferences I made based of clues.
I think Mr. Cobble put his store on the border for many reasons. One is that he wanted it to be a store for anyone to go to. Blacks and whites. Also Hector street is visible to blacks or whites. I know it is open to both groups because Maniac went with Amanda and with Russell and Piper. Cobbles Knot would open to more challengers too.
Also with he gets twice as much business than it being for only west enders or east enders. If he has twice as much business he make twice the amount of money. So putting it there is a moneymaker. Overall Mr. Cobble made a good decision put his shop on the border of the east and west ends.
If Hollis and Maniac started a blog it would be called “do not do.” It would be about what not to do based on their hardships in their life. They would talk about how they ran away from problems that they shouldn’t of ran away from. They could talk about how they ended up where they started so it wasn’t very smart to run away from their hardship. They could also talk about the dangers of running away because it isn’t very safe. Some of the dangers they could talk about is the shelter issues and money for food and water. Their blog would teach kids not to run away from their problems but tell them to solve them.
Woah...amazing synthesizing, Makenna!
How are the Beale's house and the McNab's house different?
The Beale's house is clean and tidy but the McNab's house is dirty and messy. Also the Beale's house doesn't have beer bottles everywhere but the McNab's house does. Also the McNab's house has bugs and turtles in but the Beale's house only has a dog for a pet. Finally, the people in the Beale's house have manners but the people in the McNab's house don't.
Infer why Maniac did not show hi emotions after Grayson died.
When Maniac did not show his emotions when Grayson died I thought that he might have been embarrass to cry. I think this because in the story he looks scronny and not strong but he really is strong and did not want people think he was not. Also he could of just knew something bad was going to happen and he would have to go away. I think this because when he was with the Beal’s he thought everything was his fault so he left. Also when he was with other families something happened and he left. One last reason I think is that he was curious of what happened to him. He might have been really curious of what happened he just was not thinking about how sad he really was. Sadly in the end he did cry when he closed his eyes to sleep
Infer why maniac chose to sleep in the Buffaloes pen rather than another animals pen.
I think that maniac chose the Buffaloes pen rather than other animals pens because he was friends with the Buffaloes. Also in the Buffaloes pen is where Grayson found maniac and took him home. If maniac went to another animals pen than they would have been scared and probably case him away. But with the Buffaloes, they don't mind him being there and won't think he's trying to hurt them.
Another reason why maniac prefers to sleep in the Buffaloes pen than any other animals pen is that he is kind to him. For Christmas, maniac gave the baby Buffalo a scarf. Also maniac works in the zoo with Grayson so the Buffaloes almost see maniac every single day. The Buffaloes also like maniac. The Buffaloes are friendly to maniac so he is friendly to them .
Synthesize If Maniac and Hollis made a book What would it be named? What would it be about?Write the first paragraph
The book would be called Our Journey and it would be about their journey to a new life.
The first paragraph
Hollis: I was never with my parents. I was left behind at Hollis Woods with a paper that said my name was Hollis Woods. But I went to many foster homes and none of them felt right. Jefferey (Maniac): My parents died when I was at a young age. They were on a P&J Trolley and it fell. So I was sent to live with my Aunt and Uncle, but they were always fighting. Soon they had two of everything except me. They tried to share custody of me but I ran away.
Mr. Cobble put his shop in the middle of the east and west end. I think he did this because he wanted more customers. If he put it just on one side if the town only the people that live there would go to it. Since he put his shop in the middle both sides would go to it. I also think he wanted to bring both sides together. If he didn't want to bring both sides together he would have put the shop in the side he belongs to. That's why I think Mr. Cobble put his shop in the middle of the east and west end.
Nice post! Which side do you think Mr. Cobble is from? What about the knot?
I am Jeffrey Magee. My parents died when I was very young in the P&W trolly crash. I guess I never really had a father from that time on. I met Grayson while I was in a poor time. I was living alone in the buffalo pen at the zoo. I was sound asleep with my clothes torn. He didn’t judge me from my outside. He instead picked me up and got my life back on track. He bought me clothes and food to stay healthy. He lived in the YMCA and had a job in parks and recs.
Grayson was like the father I never had.He cared for me and taught me things.Grayson told me stories. The stories were of when he played baseball and struck out Willy Mays.Or of his childhood too.Grayson even moved into 101 bandshed with me. He really had no family like me and accepted me for who I am.
Grayson was my friend. He was more like family.I wish I could still sit in the bandshed and read with him or play catch. He made me feel like I had a real home. Not a part time home, a real one. Like I was home.I would do anything to get Grayson back.I really miss him.
Yours was very good. I liked how you motioned that how he taught Maniac things. This was vey thought out. Over all I think our eulogy idea desires a 4!
Infer why Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan hate each other
In the book Maniac Magee, Aunt Dot, and Uncle Dan hate each other. I think they hate each other because one of them, either Aunt Dot, or Uncle Dan, looks like one of Maniac's parents, so they don't like to look at him/her because it reminds them of Maniac's parents too much. They also don't like to hear them because they sound like that parent. This means that they hate each other because, they remind themselves of Maniac's dead parents by being near each other. I know this because, on pg. 6 of Maniac Magee it states, “Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan hated each other, but because they were strict catholics, they wouldn't get a divorce. Around the time Jeffery arrived, they stopped talking to each other. Then they stopped sharing.” This quote tells me why they hate each other because when Jeffery arrived his parents had died. They most likely stopped talking to each other because one of there voices sound like one of Maniac's parents, so they got sad and stopped talking. Then they stopped sharing because then they would have to go near each other, and see the other's face which made him/her sad, again. Remember, this all happened when Maniac came to their house. Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan hate each other because they remind each other of Maniac's parent's, who are dead.
Wow, Rose! Amazing inference!
What long-term effect could this have had on Maniac???
Mr.Cobble put his store on the border of the West End and the East End. Why did he do this? I think he did because he wanted business from both communities. If he put it on just one side he wouldn't get as much customers. Also maybe he knew that someday this lunatic kid was going to come and use his store to help bring together the blacks and the whites. Or maybe he built his store before the Hector street line was made and he just got lucky. Maybe he wanted to bring together the blacks and whites himself and have them in the same store so he could make them become friends. Another reason is if he thought the blacks and whites were going to talk trash to each other on the Hector street line they might want to grab some pizza or soda. Maybe he made cobbles knot and he wanted both the black community and the white community to try to untie it. Well, there are some of the reasons why I think Mr.Cobble put is store on the Hector street line.
I really like how you came up with multiple reasons why he put the store in the middle. My favorite one that probably makes the most sense (in my oppion) is he wanted to bring the whites and blacks together himself.
I think that if Maniac and Stanley wrote a book it would be called "Run". It would be about a boy who had the "perfect" family but one day got the urge to run away. He thought his family was too "perfect" so he ran. He meets new people and discovers secrets and magic about his town from long ago. Will he ever find the need to come back to his "perfect" family?
I think that this is what they would write about because first, neither of them ever had the experience of having a "perfect" family. Also, I think that they would want the character to discover secrets and magic because Maniac had never known or experienced magic for himself so he might want to get to write about what he thinks that it would be like. Stanley has known about good luck so he would get to write more about different types of magic and make up secrets about the made up town.
*Chapter 13*
Dissstractions
I had now come to a clearing in the woods. But it wasn't that clear. There was mist and a lake. The lake was more like a bog. There was no getting around it and no jumping over it. I looked around for something I could use to bridge myself across. Aha! I found a tree that had probably fallen down in the storm. I ran over to it and dragged it to the bog. I threw it as hard as I could over the bog. Yes! The end of it landed right on the other side. "Careful," I thought as I slowly walked over the dead tree. I was half way across when all of a sudden I heard a soft high pitched voice, "watch your sssstep little boy," SPLASH! I fell right into the water. "Who said that?!" I said. "Over here in the grasss," said the voice.......
Ummm...This is AMAZING. Any chance we could see more? Please???
OMG this is amazing! I love how you used a red flag phrase.
Infer how the imaginary line on Hector street was made.
I think the imaginary line on Hector street was made when Two Mills decided that whites and blacks should not live near each other because they didn't know what the others could do. I think this because on page 87, Spinelli wrote " Them black people, they eat mashed potatoes, too?" This means that the West end was not sure about what the people in the East end could do.
Also, the West end might have thought that the black people could hurt them. On page 149 Piper and Russell said " Maniac! You're alive!... We thought they got ya! We thought they slit yer throat!" after Maniac went over to the East End to race Mars Bar Thompson. Piper and Russell thought that the black people tried to hurt Maniac.
If Maniac and Hollis started a blog, I think it would be about being an orphan and wanting a family. I think this because in the story Pictures of Hollis Woods the only thing Hollis wanted was a family that loved her. Maniac wanted a family, too. Neither of them remembered their parents, so they didn't really know what a family was like at the beginning of their stories.
Maniac and Hollis both ran a lot. Hollis had been running away from bad foster homes all her life, but Maniac was going from place to place for the whole book.
I think that Mars Bar treated Maniac better as a white person than other white people for many reasons. One reason why I think Mars Bar treated Maniac differently than other white people because Maniac wasn't scared of Mars Bar because he was sure of himself to win the running race when Mas Bar threatened Maniac he was badder than ever. Another reason why I think Mars Bar treated Maniac differently than other white people because Amanda and her family treated Maniac like a family member which probably made Mars Bar think if a black person accepts him I can too. The last reason why I think Mars Bar treated Maniac differently than other white people because he might of realized if Maniac and I are friends I won't have to deal with other white people being mean to the East end.
I am Jeffrey Magee. My parents died when I was very young in the P&W trolley crash. I started to work with him. I worked for free. I still loved working with him. He wasn't just my friend, he was family.
I remember when I found out he couldn't read. I decided to help him learn to read. This made him feel special. Well even though he didn't show his feelings, I could see them through his eyes. Grayson began to read more and more books. He got better an better. I knew he was happy. For Christmas I made him a book. I wasn't expecting a present in return but I was given one.
I also remember the stories Grayson told me. It was when he was in the minor leagues. He was great. He told me how he struck so many people out. He told me he even struck out Willie Mays! I was astonished. He was amazing. I looked up to him. I felt as if he was my father. As I said earlier he did give me a present in return. He gave me his old glove he used in the minors. It looked old and broken but it was all I ever wanted in life. I will now cherish this glove as if it is my baby.
We miss you Grayson, I can't wait to see you again.
I think Mr. Cobble put his store on the invisible border line because he wanted both blacks and whites to be able to buy his products. Also he would get a lot more customers than he would by building it on either the East end or the West end.
If Maniac and Hollis made a blog what would it be named and what would it be about, why. Be the first to comment on the blog.
If Maniac and Hollis made a blog I think it would be named, "how to stay fit." It would be named this because Maniac and Hollis ran away from a lot of people who cared for them. Also it would be about running away from your homes. It would be about this because again Maniac and Hollis ran away from a lot of homes. I think e first comment would be about how to prepare yourself from running away. The comment would say to run away you need to get mad and then have a lot of energy and finally just run for it. Maniac and Hollis have a lot of traits similar to each other.
I think that Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan, from Maniac Magee, hate each other because they might have had a big argument about a topic, like moving into a new house, a few years ago. One of them didn't want to let it go. The fight carried on for a while and finally one of them started to refuse to talk to the other one. But since their religion won't let them get a divorce they had to live this way, and when they took in Maniac they stayed refusing to be near each other. On page 6 Spinelli wrote,” Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan hated each other, but because they were strict Catholics, they wouldn’t get a divorce. Around the time Jeffery arrived, they stopped talking to each other. Then they stopped sharing.”
Along with not talking, they weren’t being respectful to each other and they stopped sharing. Page 6 also quoted, “pretty soon there were two of everything in the house.” I think the cause of this was that since they still refused to talk to each other, they had to have everything of their own. Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan had hate towards each other and that could be the reason why they stopped interacting with each other or Maniac.
I can infer that Piper and Russel will not go to school without motivation because school is not that great. It takes a lot of hard work since there is more than one subject to work on. Plus there is not much time for fun and talking and at home you can have fun all day. Also you get homework. So knowing that you are going to come home with more work does not make you eager to go to school. Maybe that is why Piper and Russel will only go to school if they get something in return.
Another reason Piper and Russel will not just go to school is no one is teaching them to. They had no good role model that would tell them they need to go to school. So they think it is fine not to go to school and they probably think, " why should I?"
I think that The Beale's mother is different from the McNab's father in so many ways it's not even funny. The McNab's father is a slob who is too lazy to fix a hole in his ceiling that his sons could fall down and get hurt. Also, instead of making dinner for his children like a good parent would. He just gets takeout from Burger King and says "come eat". Finally, he does not care what his kids do. Piper and Russell skip school and John drinks beer even though he is way under age. Mr.McNab even builds a pillbox to defend against blacks even though they are more mature than him!
However, Mrs. Beale on the other hand is a nice, loving mother who takes in Maniac as her son even though they are different colors. Also, she actually cooks good food a makes good cakes unlike Mr.McNab who gets takeout instead of cooking. Mrs.Beale respects every race, unlike Mr.McNab who is extremely racist against blacks. Finally, Mrs.Beale actually takes care of things around the house by cleaning up and making sure her children take baths. These two characters are very different and definitely make the book more interesting.
If Maniac and Hollis were to make a blog then it would be called, "running away from challenges in life." I say this because both faced challenges and never solved it the correct way. Instead they ran away from it and that would affect them later in life. So that is way they should name there blog that because that is probably what they would talk about.
The first blog comment would probably talk about one of there challenges in life or difficulties. So Maniacs would probably be, "During my life I faced multiple challenges and never faced them the right way. Instead of rethinking the problem and thinking of solutions I ran away from the problem. So now when I think back to it I feel like I did the wrong thing." That could be Maniacs first post because if he didn't run away from his problem then he would have found a family sooner rather than later. Finally, Hollis and other people can refer to things that happend to them like that or they could help him think of solutions if that happens again.
I think Mr. Cobble put his store on the line because he wanted more people to buy his products. Also because he wanted both blacks and whites in his store. Another reason is he wanted not only blacks to be able to try their skills at untying the legendary Cobble's Knot. Also so whites could try their skills too.
How are Russell & Piper and Hester & Lester different?
Hester & Lester and Russell & Piper are different because they are different colors. What I mean is that Hester & Lester are black and Russell & Piper white. The next difference between Hester & Lester and Russell & Piper is H+L are good and R+P are bad. H+L know when to be good and when to be silly. R+P are mean and nasty and they do whatever they want whenever they want. The last difference is they live on different sides of town. H+L live on the East end and R+P live on the West end.
