Make an Inference about Mr. King and his "cage".

Lets make an inference about Mr. King and this "cage" he has. Take a look at the text below!

What was he pointing at? I took a step to the side and saw it at last, but I still didn't understand what I was looking at. There were blinking lights and a microphone, a bunch of black boxes with dials and knobs. It looked like a combination of a computer and an old-fashioned radio. "What is it?" I asked after a few seconds.

Make an INFERENCE about the cage using clues from the book and your background knowledge.

I infer that Mr.King wants to trap Gayle in the “cage”. I infer this because when little John first heard her singing Mr.King was there too. So, he might think that she is really good and want to have her singing voice to himself. Or, he hates the singing and doesn't want to hear it ever again. So, he traps her in the cage and keeps her somewhere where he cannot hear her voice ever again but, when Mr.King was listening to her sing his mouth was open in surprise, so, i think he wants her voice to himself.

Ty I disagree because I think that Mr. King wants Gayle to help heal the tree withe her voice not trap it just for himself, but he also might want just so he can heal himself with her voice.

To Ty Yuen

I agree with your thought on Mr king wanting her voice to himself because Mr king wanted to trap her, so he might of wanted to record her singing and then keep it to himself and hide her forever from the public

I can infer that The Emperor’s “cage” is a recording set. I know this because the “cage” has microphones, and what sounded like speakers in the book. I also know this because Gayle’s voice is beautiful, so a person like The Emperor would want to record it to sell it on CD’s. I do not know how The Emperor could call it a cage, however. He might have meant a cage for Gayle’s voice?

I used to think that there was a music studio in the “cage” for Mr. Kings secret band but, now I believe it is a recording studio for Gayle’s voice too. You gave a reason about why he trapped her that was related to why she was in the “cage” that made me change my mind.

I can infer that he is pointing at music stage. I can infer this because I think that Mr. King keeps Gayle trapped. I concluded that Mr. King knows about Gayle's “powers” and he uses those “powers” to help the trees grow and thrive. For example when little John heard her sing he said that it was a magical voice.

I would agree with you because it did say that he was going to try to put her in a cage, and it mention about her being like a bird. I didn't think of it in that way but now it comes to mind.

I can infer that Mr. King wants to put Gayle in the cage he has. I can infer this because in the book, he pulled Little John aside and asked questions about Gayle. Mr. King probably wanted to know more information about Gayle because he saw Gayle in the tree talking to Little John. I also know this because you usually use cages for birds. In the book, Mr. King said that he saw Gayle fly so maybe he saw Gayle turn into a bird and he wants to capture her because it isn’t normal for humans to turn into birds.

I found your thought about Gayle turning into a bird interesting. I had the same thought when the book said that Mr. King watched Gayle fly off. I even think Gayle’s parents are birds, because Gayle said that her parents flew off too.

Calvin

That would explain why Gayle’s parents “Flew off.” Maybe they are humans who can turn into birds too. It would also explain why Gayle built a nest and why she was singing in the middle of the night at Mrs. Cutlin’s house. Maybe she was calling to her parents, hoping they’d hear her call and recognize it.

I infer that Mr. King wants Gayle to sing for him. I can infer this because the “cage” was blinking lights, a microphone, and a bunch of black boxes that had dials and knobs. The black boxes could be speakers, because I know that speakers have dials and knobs. Also I know that the emperor lives by himself. Also Mr. King was talking about, Gayle and her singing, to little John.

I can infer that Mr. King and his “cage” seem innocent but are actually very dangerous and troubled. I think this because in the paragraph it states “There were blinking lights and a microphone, a bunch of black boxes with dials and knobs. It looked like a combination of a computer and an old-fashion radio” Usually there is nothing wrong with a computer, old-fashion radio, and a microphone. Also Mr.King was very calm with Little John this proves that he wanted to trick Little John to think that what he wanted was not going to harm Gayle in any way, but it actually might hurt her. This is what I can infer about Mr. King and his “cage.”

I think that when Emma says that Mr. King could harm Gayle she means her voice. Mr. King might record Gayle’s voice to make money off it. Once he is finished he could harm Gayle’s voice so nobody but him could listen to it and if anyone wanted to listen to it they would have to pay. This could be how Mr. King got so rich in the first place.

I can infer that Mr.King is crazy. I can infer this because he wants to know a lot about little John's friend, Gayle. Mr.King also has a “cage”, and he told little John the cage was for Gayle. I can infer that the “cage” that Mr.King has is really a stage set. I can infer this because in the text it says “There were blinking lights and a microphone,a bunch of black boxes with dials and knobs. It looked like a combination of a computer and an old-fashioned radio.” I think the black boxes with dials and knobs are speakers. That’s what I think the cage is.

My inference about the cage is that it’s Mr. King’s basement. I infer this because I know in most people's basements usually contain objects used for someone's hobby. I’m assuming Mr. King’s hobby is playing in a band because of all of the instrumental objects including speakers and a microphone. I also infer this because in most movies people trap people in their basements and I infer that Mr. King is trapping Gayle in his basement. I infer he is trapping her because he found her in his yard and probably thought she was trespassing. I know he wouldn't like that.

Why his basement? What evidence leads to the basement? And why would he be in a band? The book said the instrumental objects were the cage.

I can infer that Mr. king is planning to catch Gayle. I infer this because on a piece of paper there was a diagram of a cage. I know that cages are for capturing someone. So I conclude that he will use the cage to capture Gayle. Also, in the text Mr. King states,¨I have something for your friend.¨

I infer that the Mr. King’s cage is a type of fenced in stage. I believe this because the cage has a microphone. When the author talks about “... a bunch of black boxes with dials and knobs.” I think that she is referring to speakers. I think Mr. King is trying to get Gayle into the cage so that he can make her sing for him, or for other people so he could make even more money. I deduced this because on the back cover it says that Mr. King will try to make Little John betray Gayle. I think that Mr. King will try to blackmail Little John into getting Gayle to go to Mr. king. If Little John does do what Mr. King wants, he will give Little John’s family money to get back on their feet. If Little John doesn’t do what Mr. King wants, he’ll stop paying Big John to trim his trees and Little John’s family will starve.

I can see why you said that Mr. King would stop paying Little John's dad if Little John didn’t do what Mr. King wanted but, I can’t see why he would fire the best person to trim his trees because of a silly little grudge on Little John.

It was very cool how you could infer and get right that Mr. King wanted to blackmail Little John and his family for Gayle’s voice with money, or if Little John wasn’t going to do it then the family will pay for the consequences of his actions. Before reading your post I hadn’t thought that Mr.King would blackmail Little John’s family. But what evidence lead you to believe that it was a fenced in stage? Also did you think it was more of Mr. King trapping Gayle or Gayle’s voice?

Reply
Lucy O'Connell
1/10/2019 09:14:30

I can infer that Mr. King’s “cage” is a microphone with speakers that he will use to force Gayle to sing. I can infer this because I know that he heard Gayle singing. When Little John was outside and Gayle was singing Mr. King comes outside and, like Little John, her voice brings a tear to his eye. Mr. King was also interested in Gayle. Mr. King is a very rich man that doesn’t like kids, so why would he be interested in Gayle? I can conclude that the only reason Mr. King is interested in Gayle is for her voice. I can also infer this because of what the “cage” looks like. The text states that, “There were blinking lights and a microphone, a bunch of black boxes with dials and knobs.” The microphone could be used for gale to sing into and the “black boxes with dials and knobs” is a speaker and the dials and knobs are to adjust the volume. It is stated the Gayle’s voice lifts the burden of Little John’s sister’s death so it is possible that Mr. King wants Gayle to lift whatever burden he has.

I infer that Mr King is going to try to trick Little John into trapping Gayle so he an run experiments on her. I predict he is going to do that because he tricked Little John to go into the room so he could probably trick Little John into trapping Gayle. Mr King probably wants to trap her so he can record her singing and make money from a song from Gayle. I infer that because When he saw Gayle, his mouth was open wide and it looked like he liked her singing.

I can infer that Mr. King wants to lock Gayle in the cage. Mr. King wants to lock her up because of her singing. It said there was a microphone so I think Mr. King wants to record Gayle singing. I think this because in the story it said how Mr. King could have heard Gayle singing. Mr. King probably thinks Gayle’s singing is amazing and wants to keep her because of that. I think he might keep her all to himself. I also think the cage is to just record her singing. So then Mr. King can listen to it for a long time.

I infer that Mr. King’s “cage” is Gayle’s nest because Gayle acts like a bird, and Mr. King says whenever he gets near Gayle, “flies off”. Also because she is great at singing and wants to make a wants to make a living of her singing I think my second reason is better because there is a mic on kings desk.

I can infer that the cage was like kind of a room. I can infer that the cage was a room because blinking lights, a microphone, and a bunch of boxes wouldn’t fit in a tiny cage. Also I thought that Mr. King would put someone in that cage and I thought that no person can fit in a cage because it would be too small.

I infer that Mr.King's “cage” is some sort of sound device. I infer this because there are knobs and dials on black boxes, which could be speakers. The microphone could be used to record a sound, possibly Gayle’s great singing voice. I think this because he was talking about Gayle to Little John. And it could look like a radio because there is a radio inside the cage. Maybe the radio will be used to play Gayle’s singing? That is what I infer about Mr. King’s “Cage”

Based on the details we recently read in the book Nightingale's Nest, I can infer that ¨the cage¨ Mr.King has for Gale is a recording studio so he can make money off a song she sings. I think this because in the book it said ¨There were blinking lights and a microphone, a bunch of black boxes with dials and knobs. It looked like a combination of a computer and a old-fashioned radio.¨ Then when he asked what it was Mr.King responded, ¨I suppose you can call it, a cage.¨ Mr.King is a money maker and with Gale´s amazing voice he can make a lot of money. Also, blinking lights, a microphone, black boxes with dials and knobs. This paints a perfect picture of a recording studio. Which leads me to believe Mr.King wants to make a CD of Gale´s voice.
