Southeast Region Crisis - Performance Task!

Do you like candy and sweets? Of course you do, you’re a kid!
Well guess what, we have big problem.

There has been a major drought in the Southeast. It has caused many problems. The drought has creted perfect conditions for The Pyrilla Bug (Pyrilla purpusilla Walker) to infest sugarcane plantations in the South, and the sugarcane companies are struggling to produce enough sugar for the USA. There will be no candy or sweets for a very long time….UNLESS YOU CAN SOLVE THIS PROBLEM!
First…let’s look at a few facts:

Florida, the top producing state, produced more than 13.1 million tons of sugarcane for sugar in 2011. The state typically contributes about half of the total U.S. cane sugar crop. That same year, Louisiana produced more than 10.8 million tons of sugarcane.
The process of separating sugar from the sugarcane plant is accomplished through two steps: sugar mill crushing and sugar refinery extraction. Sugarcane is initially processed into raw sugar at mills near the cane fields. Because cane is bulky and relatively expensive to transport, it must be processed as soon as possible to minimize sugar deterioration. The raw sugar is then shipped to refineries to produce refined sugar. The final products of refining include powdered, granulated and brown sugar, which is sugar that contains some molasses.

Can you solve this problem?
Here are some ideas to help you get started:
-Why is all of our sugarcane grown in the Southeast?  AND how did the Sugarcane Industry start there?
-Are there other regions that can help you?
-What do you have to offer in return?
-Is there another way to make things sweet?
-How will you get rid of these pests permanently so you can eventually grow sugarcane again?
