Mr. Pestone’s reading class recently used the app Storyboard That to demonstrate their digital storytelling skills during a final project for the book, Number the Stars. During the project, students carefully planned a conversation between a main character from the novel and a real person from history, then they artfully designed and completed mini graphic novels/comic strips depicting the conversation. Not only did the projects require creative collaboration, they reflected deeply on Number the Stars' themes, used several vocabulary words from the story, contained historical curriculum connections, and challenged the students to show rather than just tell. Some specific literary elements the students incorporated were: flashbacks, show-don’t-tell writing, personification, setting design, metaphors, narrator voice, and theme.
